Round Valley Indian Reservation, Covelo, California
|
A NEARBY COMMUNITY!
We are called to be God's witnesses near to us (within our state). Five hours north of us is an idyllic round valley thirty miles from the rest of civilization. This is Covelo California, and in Covelo is the Round Valley Indian Reservation.
- Environment: Covelo is a farming community with around 11,000 residents. Initially, the government carved up five acre parcels on the valley floor for the Native Americans. Today, 4/5ths of the acreage belongs to Anglos. The actual Reservation is located on the back corner of the valley, but there are no fences, and barely any signs to point this out. The Covelo community is mostly integrated today.
- The People: The Round Valley Indian Reservation is home to seven California tribes. Drug use and alcoholism is high here. Unemployment is around 50%. Participation in church by the Native American population is almost unheard of.
- Covelo, California: We have established a relationship with the Round Valley Community Center which is supported by seven churches in the area. We hope to participate in quarterly events at the community center.

GETTING CONNECTED...
There are so many ways that you can help with this mission project. Here are a few examples:
- Pray for the Round Valley Community Center and the seven local churches that support it. Pray for increased facility use by the Round Valley community.
- Go on a trip to Covelo! Anyone who has been to a farming community will feel right at home in sunny Covelo. The valley is a sight to see. It's quite beautiful!
- Help raise funds for special projects.
The Mission Group rests at the monument to the tribes before descending into the valley
