How Do I Improve My Prayer Life?
July 29, 2001
Using The Prayer of Jabez as a Guide
Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.
1 Chronicles 4:10
1. "Oh, that you would bless me - let your hand be with me"
- What I seek is not more of what I can do on my own strength.
- I seek your goodness - that which you alone have the power to give.
2. "Enlarge my territory!"
- I ask for more influence, more responsibility, and more opportunity to make a mark for you.
- Everything you've put under my care, O Lord, take it, and enlarge it.
3. "Keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain."
- Keep me from making the mistakes I'm prone to make when temptation comes.
- Keep me safe from the pain and grief that sin brings.
- Put up a supernatural barrier to protect me from dangers that I can't see and from those that I think, arrogantly, that I can handle.
- Keep me safe from temptations that pull at my emotions and my physical needs, that call out to my sense of what I deserve, what I have the "right" to feel and enjoy.
- Because you are the true source of all that is really life, direct my steps away from all that is not of you.

Using The Lord's Prayer as a Guide
"Lord, Teach Us to Pray" - Luke 11:1
1. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
- Picture the event of the cross and thank God that, by virtue of the Sacrifice of Jesus, you can call him your "Father" and be in his presence.
- Ask God to enable you to keep his name holy and that anyone who teaches or lives contrary to the Word of God will not negatively impact your life.
2. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
- Ask God to rule and reign in you that your heart's desire is God's desire for you.
- Ask God to break the enemy's plan and power in your life so that you can more freely seek God's will for you.
- Ask the same for your family members, church (staff, lay leadership, the people of Mount Olive, the harvest of souls), nation (name the city, state and national leaders).
3. Give us this day our daily bread.
- This is where you pray for your specific needs and for those of others.
- Remember to be thankful for all the blessings, people, provision. etc. that he has given you.
4. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
- Ask God to forgive you for your sins.
- Tell the Father that you forgive and release those who have sinned against you.
- Set your will to forgive those who will sin against you in the future.
5. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
- Ask the Father to make you strong in your faith and in the ability to resist temptation.
- Ask him to put a "hedge of protection" around you and those you love. (Read through Ephesians 6:10-18)
6. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen
- Express your thanks that you have been heard and that the Father has answered.
- Praise him for who he is and what he has done and will continue to do in your life.
