Dying Was His Reason for Living
Sacrifice -- Why All the Blood?
Then God said, "Take
your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah.
Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you
about." Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?"
"Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are
here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt
offering?" Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for
the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. . .
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its
horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering
instead of his son.
Genesis 22:2, 7-8, 13
But Abram said, "O
Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it (God's
blessing)?" So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and
a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon." Abram
brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each
other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. When the sun had set and
darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed
between the pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said,
"To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the
great river, the Euphrates-
Genesis 15:8-10, 17-18
Tell the whole community
of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb . . .
The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect . . . all the
people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. Then they
are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the
doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to
eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made
without yeast. . . On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down
every firstborn-both men and animals-and I will bring judgment on all the gods
of Egypt. I am the LORD. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where
you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.
Exodus
12:3-13
Moses then took the blood,
sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant
that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.
Exodus 24:8
Once a year Aaron shall
make atonement on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood
of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come. It is most holy to the
LORD.
Exodus 30:10
For the life of a creature
is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on
the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.
Leviticus 18:11
On the first day of the
Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover
lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make
preparations for you to eat the Passover?"
Mark 14:12
He did not enter by means
of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for
all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats
and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially
unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then,
will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself
unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so
that we may serve the living God! For this reason Christ is the mediator of a
new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal
inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins
committed under the first covenant.
