There is a big difference between: believing in God & believing God

Most people believe in "God"

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-- and shudder.
James 2:19

Disciples of Jesus believe God

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:4-5
