With the beginning of March, we also begin our annual journey through the season of Lent. The root of the word Lent has to do with the days getting longer this time of year. But there is deeper meaning in this season. This is a time of penitent reflection about the suffering of Jesus.
Our Sunday message series for the season is Tested. We will consider what we experience in life: temptation, judgment, desire, death, and more. Our faith is tested through what we experience.
As Isaiah 48 describes, faith is forged in the furnace of affliction. Through our suffering, we learn to rely on God for strength. Through His suffering, the price of our sins was paid.
Isaiah 48:10
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;
I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.. |
During Lent it is traditional to make a sacrifice. It is good discipline to practice giving up something. The best practice is to give up something tangible and desirable. I could give up eating sardines, but I’ve never eaten them so it wouldn’t mean anything.
This year my family is participating in a program through Lahash International called “Rice & Beans Month.” This program has three central themes: Simplicity, Solidarity, and Sharing. By eating simple meals during Lent, we will be in solidarity with those whose diet is primarily these foods. And we can share from what we save to support them. You are invited to join us. Find out more at the Rice & Beans month website. And let us know so we can include you in a potluck meal on March 3, recipe exchanges, mutual encouragement, and a celebration after Easter.
In the One who refines our faith,
Pastor John
