As we move from the Christmas season into the Epiphany part of the church year we will be answering this question: Who is Jesus? This is what the season of Epiphany is all about, in fact. The word Epiphany comes from a Greek word that means reveal. It has come to be understood as a sudden realization or perception of the nature or meaning of something or an intuitive grasp of reality. Maybe the phrase, “I had an epiphany” is familiar. Scenes from Jesus’ early life demonstrate either a realization through the events or an intuitive grasp through the Spirit of who Jesus is.
How can we identify him and understand his identity? In a message in the middle of December I referenced the song, Mary Did You Know? and described some criticism the lyrics have received. But a commentary I reviewed since then recognizes that in the context of Jesus’ early life it seems Mary did not have a full understanding of who Jesus was. Other people in the narrative have information that she doesn’t immediately grasp. She, along with Joseph, ponders and marvels at what people say about Jesus and his identity.
During the month of January we will consider descriptions of the early life of Jesus –
- The naming and dedication at the temple, with Simeon and Anna there.
- The visit of the Magi, aka Wise Men.
- The visit to the temple when Jesus was twelve when he lingered there after his parents left.
- And Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan.
What can we learn from these scenes about this child (except for the fourth week, he’s pretty young)? How can we grow in our faith toward him through these lessons? And how can we apply what we know in our lives and in this New Year?
I hope you can be part of the worship services as we ask the question together, what Child is this?
